שמעון הצדיק

Shimon HaTzaddik

Shimon the Just — Kohen Gadol

Who he was

One of the last of the Anshei Knesses HaGedolah and Kohen Gadol in the 3rd century BCE — the one whose words open the first perek of Pirkei Avos, that the world stands on Torah, avodah and gemilus chassadim. The Gemara records that he went out to meet Alexander the Great at the gates of Yerushalayim. The cave has been held to be his for many centuries; it is a tradition of long standing rather than a documented burial.
