רבי חיים יוסף דוד אזולאי
Rabbi Chaim Yosef Dovid Azulai
The CHIDA — reinterred here from Livorno in 1960
Who he was
Born in Yerushalayim in 1724 and niftar in Livorno in 1806, where he was buried. When the Italian authorities planned to run a park and a road over that cemetery, Chief Rabbi Yitzchak Nissim arranged his return: a 600-square-metre plot here, an ohel built over it, and reinterment on 20 Iyar 5720 / 17 May 1960 - a hundred and fifty-four years on, answering his own written wish. Anybody looking for him in Livorno is a century too late and a continent out.
