Jerusalem
Jerusalem is the trip that needs the least explaining and the most planning: which neighbourhood you stay in shapes everything, from how far you walk on Shabbos to what is around you at night. The Old City, Rechavia, Geula and Har Nof are all different holidays.

Overview
Why visit
- The Kosel and the Kosel tunnels, and the City of David beneath the Old City.
- Yad Vashem, and the Shrine of the Book at the Israel Museum.
- The Biblical Zoo and the Tower of David, which are the days that work with children.
- Kosher food everywhere, which changes what a family holiday costs in effort.
Best time
Spring and autumn. Summer is very hot and the yom tov seasons are crowded and expensive — which for some people is exactly the reason to come then. Winter is cool and can be genuinely wet.
Who it suits
Suits everybody, which is not something that can be said of anywhere else on this list.

This part is our opinion, not a checked fact — which is why it carries no verification label. The practical sections below do, and each of them comes from a listing with a source behind it.
Where to stay
Which part of town matters more than which hotel — that is the decision that makes Shabbos walkable or not.

Getting there and around
Fly to Ben Gurion; the train reaches Jerusalem in around half an hour. Inside the city, light rail, buses and taxis — a car is more trouble than it is worth in the centre.
Before you book
- Which neighbourhood you stay in matters more here than in any other city on this list. Decide it deliberately.
- Check current travel advice and your insurer's position before booking, as you would for anywhere.
- Yom tov and chol hamoed are peak. Book flights and rooms far earlier than feels necessary.
Candle-lighting times, whether a shul still has a regular minyan, and whether a seasonal kosher kitchen is running are all things that move. Confirm them for your dates. What the labels on this page mean
